I am an award-winning software creator with a passion for turning data into a story.

A proud Yorkshireman, I now live by the sparkling shores of the East Coast of Scotland. Physicist, statistician and programmer, child of the flower-power psychedelic ‘60s, it’s amazing I turned out so normal!

Every week, while I was working as a statistician at one of the largest research hospitals in Europe, somebody would bring me their new project data and give me the tightest deadline to get it analysed. The problem was that I had to clean it first, which took me weeks every time. So I had to develop a system to get the data analysis-ready quickly – and to also teach researchers how to reduce the errors and mistakes in their data before they gave it to me.

This system was fine-tuned over several years of being a statistician, and is what I'll be teaching you in the Data Science University data cleaning courses.

I hope you get as much value out of these courses as the hundreds of researchers I've helped over the past decade.

Short, clear and practical

by Florens de Wit
"Practical data cleaning" is a call to data scientsts and other "data users" to be frugal with your time; Blogs, shares and articles on what data science is and what it could be often contain a statement like "data scientists spend [some large percentage] of their time on preparing the data and only [a small percentage] on actually squeezing actionable insight from the data.". If this is a common problem then it is partially due to lacking the insight or the incentive to set up a system that avoids having to repeat the often uninteresting steps of cleaning and preparing data. Though I am not sure I will use the knowledge and tricks shown any time soon (I'm unemployed), I will remember this when the time is right.
